The Victoria Bug Zoo opened in 1997. The vision of the zoo is to create a family-friendly place to explore the beauty and intricacy of the world of bugs. The Bug Zoo has won the Victoria Tourism Hospitality Award and features award-winning tours. Also named among the top 10 Natural History Museums in North America, the zoo has been featured in magazines across the continent.
Just a Museum?
The Bugs are alive and you can watch them and handle them. There are no specimens that are under slides or in jars, as there is almost always something interesting happening in the zoo. Here you have the opportunity to watch tarantula molting, egg case hatchings or the mating habits of exotic insects.
Yes, People Eat the Bug Candies
At the Bug Zoo, there is a gift shop where you can buy plush toys, bees wax candles, honey, bug candies and chocolate covered bugs. You can also purchase real, live bugs too! Live specimens available for purchase include tarantulas, scorpions and preying mantis egg cases. You can take a piece of the zoo home with you after the hour-long tour. A special bookings room is available for birthday parties, product launches or get-togethers of any kind. Zoo tours average one hour in length where patrons can join them in progress and continue viewing the location's many live exotic tropical insects.
